What is a Parti Sapphire?

What is a Parti Sapphire?

That familiar, but weirdly spelt word... What's it mean?

If I was born in the 60s, I'd be saying, "If I had a dollar for every time that I have been asked this...". But seeing as I'm not a cornball, I'll just continue.

I'm not going to breakdown the chemical makeup, I know why you're here. We mainly just need to just know what 'parti' means, right?

Do you know how many, 'What is a Parti Sapphire' blogs that we all need to sift through that just harp on about the geological relevance of the stone, without giving us the 'day one' answer!?

So here it is...

Think about it this way; Parti = Partition. As in colour partitioning. There is a specific colour zoning, that generally will 'partition' the greens, yellows and blues.

Here in Australia, we have a lot of these (let me get nerdy) polychrome sapphires that have the green, yellow and blue colour zones.

Strangely enough, if we were in the tourmaline discussion, they're called bi-colours. A bi-colour tourmaline, essentially is a parti tourmaline as well, but one of those weird industry quirks, no ones really calls them that. So I might mix the game up and start that trend. Anyone with me? Alright, done.

Parti sapphires are a unique type of sapphire that have recently gained popularity in the jewellery industry. These sapphires are known for their stunning range of colors and their ability to create eye-catching pieces of jewellery. In this blog post, we'll explore what makes parti sapphires so special and why they are becoming increasingly popular among jewellery designers and consumers.

So to get technical, what are Parti Sapphires?

Parti sapphires are a type of sapphire that displays two or more distinct colors. The name "parti" comes from the word "partite," which means divided or partitioned. Parti sapphires are typically cut in a way that highlights their unique color zoning, which creates a stunning visual effect.

The colors of parti sapphires can range from blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, and purple. These colors are typically arranged in stripes or patches, giving the gemstone a unique and striking appearance. Parti sapphires are often found in Australia, Madagascar, and Tanzania, although they can also be found in other parts of the world.

Why are Parti Sapphires Becoming Popular in Jewellery?

Parti sapphires are becoming increasingly popular in jewellery for a few reasons. Firstly, their unique color zoning makes them stand out from other gemstones. This makes them ideal for creating one-of-a-kind pieces of jewellery that are sure to turn heads.

Secondly, parti sapphires are more affordable than other sapphires, such as blue sapphires. This makes them an attractive option for jewellery designers who want to create beautiful pieces without breaking the bank.

Finally, parti sapphires are versatile and can be used in a wide range of jewellery designs. They look beautiful in both modern and vintage-inspired designs, and their unique color zoning can be used to create a variety of visual effects.

Are they are good option for engagement rings?

Parti sapphires are relatively hard and durable, with a hardness rating of 9 on the Mohs scale. This means that they are scratch-resistant and can withstand daily wear. However, like all gemstones, they can be damaged by sharp blows, extreme heat, and harsh chemicals.

To care for your parti sapphire jewellery, it's best to clean it regularly using a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners, as these can damage the gemstone. If you're not sure how to clean your parti sapphire jewellery, it's best to take it to a professional jeweller who can clean it safely and effectively.

In conclusion, parti sapphires are a unique and beautiful type of gemstone that are becoming increasingly popular in the jewellery industry. Their unique color zoning, affordability, and versatility make them an attractive option for jewellery designers and consumers alike. If you're looking for a stunning and eye-catching piece of jewellery, consider a parti sapphire!
